E-filing 1099 and W2 forms to the Federal Government is not only faster, but you get more time to get it done! When you print red Copy A Forms, they need to be mailed by Feb 28. But if you e-file, they’re not due until March 31.
It’s enough of a hassle to print and mail recipient copies, you don’t need to spend time repeating the process for the government copies.
The best way to go about e-filing 1099 and W2 forms depends on where your data is located. You have some options!
Your Accounting software, such as QuickBooks, may have e-filing functionality. Look in the Help system for details. You may be able to simply click a few buttons and make it happen right from your desktop software.
Specialized 1099 & W-2 Software will also have e-filing functionality. If you use one already, simply look in the Help system for instructions.
Online E-filing is now available! If you don’t use accounting software, or if yours doesn’t e-file, there is a way to get it done easily. Check out DiscountEfile.com! You can select the option to e-file only, or the one that also prints and mails recipient copies.
The one drawback to Online E-filing is that your data needs to be manually entered, or imported from your accounting software. However, that data will transfer annually, so once you get it entered, it’s easy to edit each year.
But think about the time it will save! You don’t need to print any red Copy A forms, or find 1096/W3 transmittals, search for mailing address or stuff a single envelope.
